          Teenagers today are carrying enormous emotional pressure. Between school stress, social media, sports, relationships, family challenges, academic expectations, and constant comparison, many teens feel emotionally overwhelmed but do not always know how to express it. Some become anxious. Some shut down emotionally. Some become irritable, reactive, perfectionistic, or withdrawn. Others struggle with panic attacks, low self-esteem, sleep problems, emotional sensitivity, or feeling constantly “on edge.” For many teenagers, the nervous system becomes stuck in a stress response.
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          This is where Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) can be extremely helpful.

          What Is EMDR?

          Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing is a structured therapy approach designed to help the brain process stressful or emotionally overwhelming experiences in a healthier way.

          Yet emotionally and physically, their body may still react with:

          Chronic headaches and migraines can be caused by many different things, including hormonal changes, food sensitivities and chemical imbalances. However, in many cases, acute and chronic headaches stem from tension and spasm in the cervical muscles and compression of nerves that enter into the head.
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          There are several muscles that can cause severe and even debilitating headaches. One of which is the trapezius muscle. This large muscle covers the upper back and neck. It has a tendency to be overactive, as it works full-time to maintain the position of the head and help with certain movements of the shoulder. Poor posture, prolonged computer use and even exercises that target strengthening this muscle, make the trapezius muscle is subject to chronic overload, resulting in tension and shortening of the muscle. When this happens, active trigger points can form, which are tight areas within the muscle that cause local and referred pain. The referred pain can show up as a headache. 
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          In some cases, tension in the upper trapezius can compress the greater occipital nerve, resulting in Greater Occipital Nerve Neuralgia. Symptoms are a dull, drilling pain in the morning at the base of the skull, as well as pain in the neck and sometimes shoulders. The neck is stiff and uncomfortable. Pain is normally felt on one side of the head. There is no aura, distinguishing this headache from a true migraine. Depending upon how much pressure is on the greater occipital nerve, the pain may stay in the back of the head or radiate all the way to the forehead. 
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          In other cases, the temporal artery is constricted due to the tension the upper trapezius muscle. When this occurs, it results in an acute vascular headache or migraine. This headache is much more severe than one from just an active trigger point and affects half the head and eye.
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          Another major contributor to chronic headaches is the semispinalis capitis muscle. Unfortunately, this muscle is sometimes overlooked by therapists and medical practitioners. Due to its anatomical location, it has a tendency to simply irritate, instead of compress, the greater occipital nerve. Because of this, patients will complain of a headache, but not associate it with the occipital area. These headaches can be misdiagnosed as migraines. The headaches are constant, moderate type headaches that may flare up as migraines, but without an aura. During flare-ups, patients may experience autonomic reactions, such as dizziness, nausea or sweating.
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
           If you are suffering from chronic headaches, it is important to have a proper evaluation of the neck muscles. Simple tests performed by a medical massage practitioner can help identify whether or not your symptoms are a result of tension in your neck neck muscles that harbor active trigger points and determine if these muscles are compressing nerves that enter the head. For anyone who has received Botox injections for chronic headaches, medical massage is a great alternative because it addresses the cause of the problem and works to remove the compression on the nerve permanently. 
          &#xD;

          It is known that low back pain is a major issue in our society, especially for the aging adult. I am always amazed when I have a new client who has been suffering from low back pain for a long time who has tried many ways to eliminate the pain,yet was never given a recommendation for massage therapy. A common mindset is that it is solely issues of the spine, such as disc degeneration, disc bulging or herniation,or arthritic conditions that are responsible for the person's pain. While there is a need to understand these conditions and the role they play in a person's well-being, it is equally important to understand changes that take place in the soft tissue and how these changes result in the majority of pain people experience. 
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;

          The low back consists of various muscles that attach to the spine, ribs and pelvis that can be adversely affected by our daily activities, including excessive sitting, sports, exercise programs and repetitive use. Unfortunately, these regular activities are not typically offset with a good stretching program or massage therapy to remove the build up of tension in the muscles and connective tissue. When the larger muscles of the low back become tight and restricted, they will have a negative impact on the spine, especially when one side of the back is tighter than the other. Additionally, if a person already has issues of the spine, the low back muscles may have protective muscle guarding, compounding the situation. 
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          If you are suffering from chronic low back pain, adding in regular massage therapy can be life-changing for you. Medical massage is best to be used as a first measure to address abnormalities that form in the muscles, connective tissue and skin that cause pain, as well as to remove pressure on spinal nerves caused by tension in the soft tissue. Depending on the severity of the back issue, many can see incredible changes the first session, with 3-5 sessions of medical massage needed. Then you can follow the therapy up with a good stretching routine at home. Adding in specific core exercises and eliminating aggravating activities, such as excessive sitting, will help create a healthier low back and further reduction in pain. A monthly maintenance massage, as well as a maintenance chiropractor visit can also go a long way in making chronic low back pain suffers have a much better quality of life.
